■ Intent of Creation During the Edo period, the Tsugaru clan imposed strict prohibitions on the peasants. Despite the cold climate of the Tsugaru region, they were forbidden from wearing cotton or dyed garments, and were restricted to wearing only "hemp fabric," which was unable to protect them from the cold. The hardship they endured is not difficult to imagine. In order to withstand the cold, the peasants—especially the women of Tsugaru—raised the density and thickness of the fabric through embroidery, preventing wind from passing through, and improving durability and heat retention. From the wisdom of the common people who refused to be defeated by prohibitions, and their will to survive, the "Kogin-zashi" embroidery was born. After the war, amidst the scorched earth, the Sukajan was also born as a souvenir for American soldiers and as a custom-made item, created through the strength of the people who desperately fought to live another day. This is where I felt a connection between "Kogin-zashi" and the "Sukajan." The Sukajan, known for its embroidery, and the geometric patterns of "Modoko," a form of Kogin-zashi embroidery—by merging these two, I thought we could convey the backgrounds, histories, and charms of both. "Kogin-zashi," a symbol of the oppressed common people who survived, and the "Sukajan," born from the strength of people who survived and continue to live today. These are life itself, the very essence of the soul. We must not forget this. That is why we created the Kogin-Zashi × Shakōkidogū SUKAJAN. ■SUKAJAN: A Jacket You Don’t Choose by Design, But One You Design Yourself Commonly known as Velcro® (also referred to as hook-and-loop fasteners), this jacket, the "Magic Sukajan," utilizes it almost entirely, except for the sleeves. The unique feature of this Magic Sukajan is that it is a jacket where you can design your own favorite look. The Velcro® (hook-and-loop) sections allow you to attach your favorite patches in any position you like. Instead of choosing a jacket based on its design, the Magic Sukajan serves as the base for your design. Additionally, the pockets can be repositioned, so if they are in the way, you can remove them or change their position—whether that’s from the front to the back or elsewhere. This is a jacket that doesn’t require predefined design. Unlike traditional Sukajans or regular jackets, this jacket is truly "magic."
